Side-entry garage planning: design the turn, not just the parking bay
A side-entry garage can look generous on a plan and still force a three-point maneuver every day. The critical dimension is not only the garage interior. It is the swept path between the approach, the opposite driveway edge and the garage opening.
The four dimensions that control the maneuver
Apron depth is the perpendicular distance from the garage face to the opposite no-go boundary. Garage opening width determines how much lateral error the body can carry while crossing the wall plane. Wheelbase and turning circle determine how sharply the vehicle can redirect. Overall length and overhangs determine how far the body corners swing outside the axle path.
Why rules of thumb conflict
You will see recommendations such as 20, 24, 25 or 30 feet. Those numbers can all be reasonable in a particular design, but none is universal. A compact car and a long-wheelbase pickup can require materially different maneuver envelopes. A wider door can also rescue a layout that would be awkward with a narrow opening.
Plan for the largest regular vehicle
Use the vehicle that must work every day, not the smallest car that can technically enter. If the household may add a pickup or large SUV, test that category too. For a new build, it is much cheaper to find a maneuver problem before concrete, landscaping or retaining walls are installed.
Forward entry versus backing in

Practical design margin
A design that clears by one inch in an ideal model is not a comfortable driveway. Measurement error, steering variation, curbs, snow, posts and slope all consume clearance. Start with a realistic safety margin, then field-check tight results.
